About the Australian Citizenship Test
The Australian Citizenship Test is a mandatory requirement for most people applying for Australian citizenship. The test consists of 20 multiple-choice questions drawn from the official resource “Australian Citizenship: Our Common Bond,” and you have 45 minutes to complete it. To pass, you must answer at least 15 questions correctly, and all questions in the Australian Values section must be answered correctly.
That second rule is what catches people out. A score of 15 out of 20 is a pass only if none of your mistakes were in the Australian Values section — one wrong answer there is an automatic fail regardless of how well you did elsewhere. It is the most common reason otherwise well-prepared people do not pass first time, which is why our results screens flag values questions separately.
Our practice tests mirror the format of the real exam. Each test includes 5 questions from each of the four main topics: Australian Values, Democratic Beliefs, Government and Law, and Australia and Its People. This balanced approach ensures you are tested on all areas that may appear on the actual exam.
Taking multiple practice tests is one of the most effective ways to prepare. Each test draws from different questions, giving you broad coverage of the material. After completing a test, review any incorrect answers carefully and revisit the relevant topic pages to strengthen your knowledge.

Frequently asked questions
- Is this Australian citizenship practice test free?
- Yes. The practice test on this page is completely free and needs no sign-up, no email address and no credit card. You can take it as many times as you like, and every question comes with the correct answer and a full explanation.
- How many questions are on the real Australian Citizenship Test?
- The real test has 20 multiple-choice questions drawn from the official resource "Australian Citizenship: Our Common Bond", and you have 45 minutes to complete it. Our practice tests use the same 20-question format, with 5 questions from each of the four testable sections.
- What is the pass mark for the Australian Citizenship Test?
- You must answer at least 15 of the 20 questions correctly (75%) and answer all 5 Australian Values questions correctly. Scoring 15 is not enough on its own — a single wrong answer in the Australian Values section is an automatic fail, no matter how well you score elsewhere.
- Are these the real citizenship test questions?
- No. The official questions are confidential and are not published by the Department of Home Affairs. Our questions are written to mirror the format, difficulty and subject matter of the real exam, and are based on "Australian Citizenship: Our Common Bond", which is the only resource the real test draws from.
- How many practice tests can I take?
- There are 10 full practice tests in the real 20-question exam format, plus a longer 50-question study set and a free printable PDF. Each test draws a different combination of questions, so working through several gives you broad coverage of the material.
- How should I use these practice tests to prepare?
- Take one test cold to find your weak areas, then read the explanations for everything you got wrong and revise those topics before trying another. When you consistently score 18 out of 20 or better across different tests — and never miss an Australian Values question — you are in good shape for the real exam.
