How to Pass the Australian Citizenship Test First Time: A 5-Day Plan

By the AussieReady Team7 min read20 March 2026

Why Most People Overcomplicate Citizenship Test Prep

Here is something most study guides will not tell you: you do not need months of preparation to pass the Australian Citizenship Test first time. The test has 20 multiple-choice questions drawn from a single booklet. That is it.

The problem is not the difficulty — it is the anxiety. People spend weeks reading scattered blog posts, watching random YouTube videos, and stressing about every possible topic. They study without a plan, so they never feel ready.

The truth? With a focused 5-day strategy, you can walk into your test confident and prepared. This plan is built for people with jobs, families, and limited study time. No fluff, no filler — just what works.

The Only Two Rules That Matter

Before you study a single page, understand the two rules that determine whether you pass or fail:

Rule 1: Score at least 75% overall.
You need 15 out of 20 questions correct. That gives you room to get 5 wrong.

Rule 2: Get ALL 5 values questions correct.
This is the rule that catches people off guard. Five of the 20 questions are about Australian values, and you must get every single one right. Score 18 out of 20 overall but miss one values question? You fail.

This is why your study plan must prioritise values first. AussieReady has a dedicated Values Drill mode that isolates just the values questions so you can reach 5 out of 5 before touching anything else.

Your 5-Day Study Plan (Step by Step)

Day 1 — Learn the Values
Open "Our Common Bond" and read the Australian Values chapter carefully. Then immediately jump into AussieReady's Values Drill. Do not just read — test yourself. Complete at least 3 rounds of values-only practice. By the end of today, you should understand all 4 core values well enough to explain them in your own words.

Day 2 — Cover the Four Topics
AussieReady organises all questions into 4 topic areas: Australian Values, Democratic Beliefs, Government and the Law, and Australia and Its People. Spend 15 minutes practicing each topic. This gives you broad coverage fast. Do not worry about memorising everything — the goal is exposure. The platform tracks which questions you get wrong, so nothing slips through the cracks.

Day 3 — Take Your First Mock Test (45 minutes + 15 minutes review)
Take a full 20-question mock test under timed conditions. Treat it like the real thing: no phone, no notes, 45-minute timer. After you finish, review every wrong answer carefully. AussieReady saves all your mistakes to the Mistake Bank automatically — this becomes your study guide for Day 4.

Day 4 — Crush Your Weak Spots
Open your Mistake Bank and practice only the questions you got wrong. This is where most people waste time — they re-study things they already know. The Mistake Bank eliminates that completely. Keep drilling until you clear every question from the bank. Then do one more round of the Values Drill to stay sharp.

Day 5 — Final Mock Test and Confidence Check
Take one more full mock test. Check your Readiness Score on the dashboard. If you are scoring 90% or higher and hitting 5 out of 5 on values questions, you are ready. Book your test with confidence.

The Values Section: Your 30-Minute Shortcut

The values section is where most failures happen, but it is also the easiest section to master — because there are only 4 values to learn:

1. Respect for the freedom and dignity of the individual
Everyone deserves equal treatment regardless of gender, race, religion, or background.

2. Freedom of speech and freedom of association
You can express opinions peacefully and join any organisation. This does not include hate speech or inciting violence.

3. Freedom of religion and secular government
Australia has no official religion. People can follow any faith or none. Laws come from parliament, not religious authorities.

4. Rule of law and equality under the law
Everyone follows the same laws. No one is above the law. Courts are independent from the government.

That is the entire scope. Four principles. Once you understand the meaning behind each one — not just the words — you will recognise values questions no matter how they are worded.

AussieReady's Values Drill presents these questions in different formats and phrasings so you build real understanding, not surface-level memorisation. Most users hit 5 out of 5 consistently after just 30 minutes of focused practice.

How to Know You Are Ready

Do not guess whether you are prepared. Use this checklist:

You are ready to book your test when:
- You score 90% or higher on at least 3 mock tests
- You get 5 out of 5 on values questions consistently (not just once)
- Your Mistake Bank is empty — you have cleared every wrong answer
- Your AussieReady Readiness Score shows you are in the green zone
- You can explain all 4 Australian values in your own words

You are NOT ready if:
- You still miss values questions, even occasionally
- You have not taken a single timed mock test
- You are relying only on reading without testing yourself

The Readiness Score on your AussieReady dashboard combines your mock test results, topic mastery, and values accuracy into a single number. It takes the guesswork out of deciding when to book. Trust the score — it is based on your actual performance, not a feeling.

You Are Closer Than You Think

Here is the bottom line: the Australian Citizenship Test is not designed to trick you. It is designed to confirm that you understand what it means to be Australian. With 5 days of focused, smart practice, you can absolutely pass it on your first try.

Do not spend weeks anxious and unsure. Start today. AussieReady's free plan gives you 20 practice questions and 1 mock test per day — more than enough to begin working through this 5-day plan right now.

Your citizenship ceremony is closer than you think. Let's get you there.
