Australian Citizenship Test 2026: What Changed and What to Expect

By the AussieReady Team5 min read15 February 2026

The 2026 Test Format at a Glance

The Australian Citizenship Test follows a consistent format:

- 20 multiple choice questions drawn from the "Our Common Bond" booklet
- 45 minutes to complete the test
- 75% pass mark — you need at least 15 out of 20 correct
- 5 values questions — you must get ALL 5 correct (this is mandatory)
- 4 topic areas — Australian values, Democratic beliefs and rights, Government and the law, Australia and its people

The test is taken on a computer at an approved test centre. You will see one question at a time with 4 answer choices.

What Is Different in 2026

The core format remains the same, but the content has been refreshed. The "Our Common Bond" booklet receives periodic updates to reflect current Australian society and recent changes.

Key areas that may have updated content:
- References to current government structures and leaders
- Updated statistics about Australia's population and demographics
- Refreshed examples in the values section
- Current information about rights and responsibilities

This is why using outdated practice tests from 2022 or 2023 is risky. A question about current government officials or recent constitutional changes could catch you off guard.

The Values Section Remains Critical

The most important rule has not changed: you must get all 5 values questions correct. This has been the requirement since 2020 and continues in 2026.

The 4 core Australian values tested are:
1. Respect for the freedom and dignity of the individual
2. Freedom of speech and association
3. Freedom of religion and secular government
4. Rule of law and equality under the law

These values are unlikely to change. What may change is how questions about them are worded.

What to Expect on Test Day
